Immigration Law Enforcement Guidance

Feb 10, 2025 •

The following message and resources have been copied here from The Rev. Daniel Galchutt, Executive Director of LCMS National Mission in regard to the presence of law enforcement in churches and schools.

Christ’s peace to you!

As you know, matters related to immigration have been much discussed over the last several days. LCMS schools and congregations have asked the Synod to provide guidance on what to do if a federal or state law enforcement officer comes onto church or school property.

We will be posting a resource that congregations or schools can use if they choose. Additionally, the document for schools will be sent out from the LCMS School Ministry office. I’m sharing them with you in advance of them being shared more broadly for your awareness. You may also choose to send them out directly to your district.

This guidance takes into consideration God’s Word to us in the Fourth and Fifth Commandments. I pray that we, and all the beloved members of our Synod would keep in mind the Lord’s Word in exhortation. I especially pray that we would consider Paul’s instructions in Colossians, “Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” (Col. 3:12). This is always appropriate but even more in these days of strong opinions and quick communication. I pray that the Lord would enable all of us in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod as God’s chosen ones to be kind and humble and patient as the Lord exhorts us to be in His Word.

If this guidance is used, I pray that it would benefit our ministries so that our people might respect the laws of our country, serve our neighbors in need and proclaim the Good News of Christ’s death and resurrection for all.

The Lord’s blessing to you as you serve in God’s Mission Here. You are in my prayers.

In Christ,

Rev. Daniel Galchutt
Executive Director of National Mission
